ABOUT THE ARTIST:“Art is a way of understanding life and generating beauty, for those to look into his work and to admire it, under any medium and circumstance”. Coco was born in Mexico City, amidst a family where painting and music were a daily pleasure and distraction, thus, he grew up among oil paintings, paintbrushes, charcoal pencils, art books and vinyl records music, that marked many of his childhood memories. In this context, and because he was a restless child, art was the natural resource course with which to channel his energy.
As a teenager, forms and color became for Coco, the ideal medium to express ideas and emotions, reinforced by his occurrence of combining his primary school nickname, “Coco”, with the term “Popol Vuh”, the epic Mayan culture account of the creation of the world, which gave him a greater enthusiasm for the way thoughts can be transferred towards the hands to create, thus becoming a unique, incredible language. To create for circumstances both foreseeable and accidental, Cocolvú studied Graphic Design He then had an Art and Design residence in Halifax, Nova Scotia and sometime after that, he studied a specialty in Illustration in Barcelona, where teachers from various countries assessed and helped polish Cocolvú’s talent.
During his tenure at one of Mexico City’s avant-garde advertising agencies, he helped design the image of well-known brands, and kept his personal projects on art and illustration and one fine day, he decided to be free to follow his passion. Cocolvú started to paint, intervene, manipulate and re-design all kinds of surfaces, mediums, and objects: from walls and papers, through furniture, clothing, accessories, and anything that would cross his path, with whatever manual and digital means at hand. Our artist has been integrating his own imaginary, based in an explosion of colors embodied in forms and unmistakable characters, very much his own.
